This week Halston and I mingled with cinephiles at the 25th annual Florida Film Festival and since we don’t know up from down, most of our movie reviews went like this: “Did you like the movie? Me too. It was good. Let’s get tacos. Cool.”

Here are the movies we watched: 

Louder Than Bombs (2015): A war photographer dies, leaving her husband and two sons coping with her death and learning how to move on. The teenage son is emotionally shutdown and lives inside his own shell. The older son  (played by Jesse Eisenberg) does communicate with his father but has trouble connecting with his wife and newborn.

• 4 out of 5. This movie is no longer available at the festival.

Lolo (2015): In this French film, a 40-something-year-old divorcee lives with her 19-year-old son who seems to suffer from an Oedipus Complex, constantly meddling with her love life and potential suitors. The movie had a predictable ending and the character of Lolo was so unbearable that I almost wanted to leave the theater.

Morris From America (2016): If you loved Craig Robinson on The Office…

…you’ll love him even more as a single father living in Heidelberg, Germany with his 13-year-old son Morris. Don’t worry… The movie is a lot less depressing than how I described it. In this coming of age story, we see Morris try to fit in with the other German children and falling for one of the girls from the local youth club.

• 4.5 out of 5. This movie is no longer available at the festival.

Being Charlie (2015): This dark comedy-drama chronicles an 18-year-old’s addiction to heroin and how it affected his family and his father’s race to win the upcoming election. A cast of self-absorbed characters merely using each other with a Los Angeles backdrop sets the scene for this tale of how addiction transforms lives.

The Florida Film Festival is going on through Sunday night so you still have a chance to check out some of the movies!

The Family Fang (2015): This movie features Jason Bateman and Nicole Kidman. If that doesn’t sell you on watching it, you’re clearly not human.

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?  (1966): This one is an oldie but I’ve always wanted to watch it in glorious black and white.

Raider! The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made (2015): Three 11-year-old friends remake Raiders of the Lost Ark shot-for-shot and now, 30 years later, they get back together to film the last scene–the airplane explosion.
