I find it hard to believe that Christians (or maybe a select few nut-jobs) are up in arms because Starbucks has decided against using the phrase “Merry Christmas” on their cups and instead used minimalist design. Then again, crazier things have happened in this world.
Yesterday I shared a short post that has been making its rounds on Facebook and this was my favorite quote on it:
IMAGINE IF PEOPLE CARED AS MUCH ABOUT THE OPPRESSED, MARGINALIZED, AND FORGOTTEN AS THEY DO ABOUT THEIR COFFEE CUPS.
Drops mic.
If having a coffee cup that says Merry Christmas is what should define me as a Christian then I’m going to hell in a hand-basket because I don’t drink the stuff.

What Christians can do instead of boycotting Starbucks:
1. You know that person you’ve been hounding to visit church? Treat them to coffee at Starbucks (I hear its all the rage). Ask them about their life and goals. Take the time to get to know them.
2. Pay it forward! We deserve to read something positive in the headlines once in a while and nothing will warm our hearts more than a 10-hour pay-it-forward drive-thru story.
3. Surprise your sleepy and overworked friend with coffee!
4. Plan a Starbucks outing for an hour of fellowship with your friends.
Matthew 18:20 “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”
(JK, Jesus won’t be there because the Starbucks cups don’t have his face on them)
(JK)
5. If you’re still adamant about boycotting the coffee chain, here are a list of Christmas-related activities that you can donate your time and money to instead of complaining on social media (because we don’t care):
- Operation Christmas Child
- Adopt-A-Family with Soldier’s Angels
- Give back to your favorite nonprofit on Giving Tuesday
- Package healthy meals for hungry families at my old job, Feeding Children Everywhere
- Shop for a cause with Give Kids The World Village
Merry Christmas!
