I woke up at the crack of dawn this past Monday, ready to lend a helping hand at Give Kids The World Village. Give Kids The World Village is a nonprofit resort in Kissimmee, Florida for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. The resort’s focus is providing accommodations and access to donated theme park tickets.
Once we arrived, we were given a code, which we punched into a screen to check in and gathered at The Hoppening Place for further instructions. That day, we were to volunteer at Nancy’s Kitchen, serving food and making sure all the families were having a pleasant breakfast experience.
I jumped at the opportunity to serve food to the families because I figured that making waffles would be too daunting a task, and I would somehow end up wearing the batter!
I had such a great time serving food to the families that morning, asking the kids what their plans were for the day and what theme park they were most excited to visit. I also learned that GKTW practically runs on volunteers. One of the ladies I was working with had been volunteering there for over 20 years!
We met a large number of Hispanic families throughout the day day and it felt good to be able to speak to them in their language.
If you’re an individual looking to give back to the community and have the ability to speak more than one language, I urge you to volunteer your time at Give Kids The World, as the nonprofit is constantly looking to fill volunteer roles there.
I can’t wait to go back!
